Jumpstart with Bill & Terry
Bill is WAFT’s hardest-working leader, guiding the team and keeping things running strong. You’ll also hear him with his wife, Terry, on Jumpstart every weekday morning from 7-9am and throughout the week.
“Enjoy what you do and never work a day in your life!” I’ve had the privilege of growing up in radio since I was 6 weeks old lying on a receiving blanket at the inaugural broadcast of a Christian station in Florida in 1960. When I was 11, my dad helped me build a small low power station with a Radio Shack wireless mic, a homemade mixer board mounted on a plexiglass sheet and a microphone and tape recorder. My parents moved to Georgia that year and started WAFT (1971); I’ve claimed Georgia as home since then. My first taste of being on the real radio was a sink-or-swim occasion when my Dad left the building and said, “here, read this news off the teletype”.
I love missionary radio, and in-between college (Southeastern Bible in Birmingham) and going to Valdosta Tech, I was able to spend the summer on Bonaire, (just above Venezuela), at one of Trans World Radio's huge radio complexes. I have worked part time at WAFT since I was 11, and after getting married in 1982, went to work for a Motorola shop for 5 years. Just before my Dad died suddenly in 1990, the Lord had worked things out for me to be fulltime at WAFT and part time with the radio shop. I then stepped into his very large shoes when he died.
I’ve since become involved as a board member and technical consultant with a Haitian radio ministry, 4VEH. I also serve on the board of the very station my parents were a part of in Jacksonville in the 60’s. (WAYR). I was also part of a team that put in several low power FMs in the Leeward Islands (South Caicos, Grand Turk, and Providencialis). WAFT has a station in Key West (WKWJ), and when I cross the bridge to the island, I feel like it’s another missionary trip! I believe in the power of media to get the Gospel out.
Besides the work of Christian Radio, we’ve raised 3 daughters, 1 son, and now have a pile of grandchildren. I love it when they converge on the WAFT Hill and we cram everyone around the table(s)!
I couldn’t do what I do without my wife of over 42 years (Terry), and the support of the board of WAFT and you the listener. Thank you!
